NMU Dining Services - General Positions

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Works in a Dining Services operation including but not limited to cooking, cashier duties, food and beverage preparation, serving, sanitation, etc. Additional duties as assigned. 

WE HIRE STUDENT WITH OR WITHOUT WORK STUDY!! 
STARTING WAGE: $10.00/HR

POSITION KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (included but not limited to)

• Exceptional customer service skills and ability to engage with guests  
• Ability to cooperate with other employees and share work load to maintain a high level of customer service

• Ability to handle cash and use point of sale equipment
• Ability to arrive on time and work scheduled shifts
• High level of punctuality and dependability 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 
General
• Cooperate with other employees and share work load to maintain high level of customer service
• Retrieve, rotate, clean and maintain proper level of condiments, to include food and non-food items
• Keep floors clean of debris and sweep/mop
• Remove and dispose of trash, then replace trash can liners
• Maintain proper dining room cleanliness by cleaning tables and floors
• Responsible for cleanliness and over-all condition of cooking areas, service counters and cashier stations 
• Perform other related duties as assigned
• Work in a safe manner being aware of personal safety and safety of others

Cooking Duties
• Help prepare food for meals; general cooking and food productions
• Work with hot liquids, sharp utensils, power equipment, slicers, deep fryers, ovens, steamers, and hand tools
• Work with hot foods, hot liquids, sharp utensils, power equipment, slicers, deep fryers, ovens, steamers, steam kettles, and hand tools
• Serve hot food entree of the day, maintaining proper portion control
• Knowledge of Dining Service operation items, portions, proper cooking temperatures, etc.

Commissary Kitchen And Bakery Duties
• Assist in making salads, sandwiches, cups and combos.
• Slicing, dicing, and chopping vegetables; 
• Slicing meats and cheeses 
• Packaging, labeling and dating product; 
• Cutting dessert 
• Decorating cakes, desserts, etc.
• Work in the dish room; 
• Sweeping, mopping, cleaning, and organizing the work area as needed
• Follow standardized recipes.
• Follow proper sanitation procedures

Cashier
• Knowledge of Dining Services meal plans and meal prices
• Knowledge of Dining Services food item prices
• Knowledge in the operation of cash registers, and knows how to properly handle a customer transaction
• May be responsible for opening and closing one of the Dining Services Operations units each day.
• Follows cash handling procedures

Dish Sanitation Team
• Remove, sort, and rinse dishes from dish accumulator and send to dish machine
• Remove banquet dishes from carts, sort and rinse dishes and send to dish machine 
• Load soiled dishes into dish machine
• Unload clean dishes and place in appropriate carts, on shelves, room locations, etc.
• Scrape, wash, rinse and send to dish machine, pots, pans, and kitchen cooking utensils.
• Return pots, pans and utensils, to kitchen, storage areas, and production locations,
• Properly clean dish machine, dish accumulator, pot/pan sinks, and 
• Sweep floor, and mop floor in ware washing areas

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives routine supervision from Operation Managers, Full-Time Staff, Student Leaders, or Student Shift Lead.
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 
• Must be a registered student attending NMU (minimum credits 6 hours in Fall and Winter Semesters).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to lift 25 pounds

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Food preparation and/or fast food cooking knowledge 
• Willingness to improve skills
